Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide: Practical Tips for Staying Grounded

Mercury retrograde does not have to send you into panic mode. These are the practical Mercury retrograde tips I use that will help you handle tech issues, communication mix-ups, travel delays, and everyday chaos with more calm.

Mercury Retrograde Tips - Technology

Mercury retrograde is coming, and I know the internet loves to treat that like a full cosmic emergency. Personally, I don’t think we need to panic every time Mercury slows down, but I also won’t pretend I haven’t noticed the destructive pattern, especially when it comes to technology.

Tech is always the thing that gets me during Mercury retrograde. When I was doing regular live shows on YouTube, it felt like the glitches had a calendar. Trouble getting on, streaming software refusing to cooperate, audio acting weird, random issues five minutes before going live. Sometimes it could be fixed. Sometimes it couldn’t. And yes, I have lost a whole recording before, which is exactly as painful as it sounds.

So while this is not a fear based Mercury retrograde guide, it is a practical one. I see this period less as “everything is doomed” and more as a reminder to slow down, double-check the details, simplify where you can, and give yourself more breathing room than usual.

Because honestly, most of us need some of that slow living anyway.

What Mercury Retrograde Actually Means Anyway

Two things you should know. Mercury is the planet of communication, technology, travel and also how we share ideas, speak and plan. And when a planet is retrograde what it essentially means is that it’s moving backwards in the sky. At least that is from the perspective of Earth. In reality, it’s just an optical illusion because all planets move at different speeds around the sun.

So you can see why things can get messy if it’s “moving backwards”.

Practical Mercury Retrograde Tips to Survive the Chaos

Over the years I’ve come up with some non-negotiables when Mercury is in retrograde. Sometimes I forget it’s coming, sometimes they can’t be accommodated. But I try my best to reduce the friction this can cause in my life.

Slow Down Before You Send, Book, or Confirm Anything

I think this is one of the easiest ways to survive this time of year. Just double check everything, even the small things, especially the small things. This will save you from those things becoming annoying things that ruin your whole day.

So re-read that email before hitting send. Check time zones before booking an appointment. Make sure dates and names are right before you book that flight! And most importantly, step away before replying to a comment or message that made your eye twitch.

This is not about becoming obsessive. It is about giving yourself a little more space between impulse and action.
Mercury retrograde is great at showing us where we are rushing and not fully present. The best protection is simply to slow down so you can notice more things.

And honestly, these are all good things to practice all the time.

Back Up Your Digital Life

This is the part where I become very serious for a second: back up your files. I don’t do this all the time (even though I need to). But during Mercury retrograde? I’d be a fool not to.

If there is anything you would be upset to lose, make sure it exists in more than one place. Photos, work documents, podcast files, video recordings, blog drafts, important templates, passwords, digital planners… whatever matters to you.

I know this sounds obvious, but it is one of those things people usually remember after something goes wrong. And as someone who has lost an entire recording before and hard drives worth of files, I can confirm that future you will be deeply grateful if present you takes the time to make a backup.

Mercury retrograde is also a good excuse to clean up your digital clutter. You do not need to overhaul your entire online life. But maybe delete a few things, organize your desktop, clear your downloads folder, or finally rename the file called “final-final-actually-final-version-3.”

Small digital resets count.

Take a Breather on Tech

If you have something important that depends on technology, either build in extra time or see if you can reschedule.

This is especially true for livestreams, podcast interviews, Zoom meetings, webinars, launches, website updates, or anything involving a microphone, a camera, your laptop, even a printer or the internet.

Test things before you way need them. Restart your computer before the call. Check your microphone. Make sure the software works. Save the link somewhere easy to find. If you are recording something important, consider having a backup recording method.

You do not have to plan for disaster. You are just creating a little more support in case something gets weird.
And if you can avoid scheduling something very important and dependent on tech during Mercury retrograde, I personally would. I know it’s not always possible, of course. Life does not pause because of a planet. But if I have a choice? I am not scheduling the most important podcast interview of my life during a retrograde unless absolutely necessary.

I have learned things the hard way.

Leave Room for Travel and Schedule Changes

Travel during Mercury retrograde does not mean something bad will happen. But it does mean I would be more intentional about checking the details.

Look over your reservations. Screenshot confirmations. Make sure you have addresses saved somewhere accessible. Check your transportation times. Leave earlier than you think you need to. Bring the charger. Bring the snack. Bring the backup plan.

Revisit Instead of Forcing Something New

Mercury retrograde is also a great time to review, revise, revisit, reorganize, reconnect and return.

I know we don’t always want to do those things because it feels like going backwards or standing still. But it can be incredibly helpful. So instead of forcing something new, take a look at what’s already there and see what needs your attention.

Maybe there’s an old project you want to finish. Maybe your planner system needs to be simplified. Maybe your inbox is overflowing. Maybe there is a book you want to reread because your brain needs comfort.

Pick up an old favorite. Return to something familiar and let your mind settle into a story, routine, or practice that already feels safe.

Communicate With More Patience

When everyone is rushing, distracted and overstimulated, misunderstandings can happen. And during Mercury retrograde we are just adding a little extra fuel to that fire.

So this is a great time to be clearer, repeat important details. Maybe ask follow-up questions. And most importantly, give people grace. That includes yourself.

You may forget something. You may misread something. You may need to ask someone to repeat themselves. None of that means you are failing at life. It means you are human and life has a lot of tabs open.

Use This Time for Extra Self-Care

I know “self care” can become one more thing on the list, but that is not what I mean here. I mean the small, ordinary comforts that help your nervous system remember it’s safe. A bath. A cup of tea. A walk. A favorite snack. A comfort read. A quieter evening. A little journaling before you respond to something emotionally loaded. Five minutes of breathing before you open the laptop again.

Grounding matters. You do not need an elaborate ritual unless you want one. Sometimes the most supportive thing is closing the extra tabs, lighting a candle, and deciding that not everything needs to be solved tonight.

Final Thoughts

Mercury retrograde doesn’t mean you have to go into crisis. You don’t need to cancel your life, blame every inconvenience on the planets, or treat the next few weeks like a cosmic punishment.

But you can use it as a reminder to slow down.

That is the real survival guide. Not controlling everything. Just creating a little more support so life feels easier to move through.

And please, for the love of all things sacred, save the recording.
